Do you have any recommendations for preventative skin care?? If someone is just starting to see fine lines around the eyes, etc, do you know of any good products that they can use that is really moisturizing? Is Creme de la Mer worth it, or is a “miracle” not really out there?

Dear Taranom,
As far as skin care goes it really does depend on your skin, although there are three essential ingredients to a good moisturizer and they are Vitamin A, C, & E . For fine lines around the eyes prevention is key! There is no way to get rid of wrinkles after they appear, but a good eye cream with Vitamin E will slow down aging.
As for Creme de la Mer, yes it is as good as they say it is, it is not too heavy and makes your skin look and feel great. The down side to using expensive skin care products is that you do not apply them as generously as you would normally use your skin care products.
My suggestion is go with something that suits your budget and has the essential ingredients Vitamin A, C, E and don’t forget your sunscreen!

What are some new looks that your seeing for 2009?
April 15th, 2009 at 12:23 am
Dear CC,
That is a great question and you asked it a perfect time for the new season. The top makeup trend for spring 2009 is the smokey eye. This year is all about dark eyes, matte skin and nude lips. Makeup artists are saying goodbye to heavy bronzing, instead they are mixing the bronzing with a pale pink blush and applying it to the apples of cheeks.
Popular makeup colors for the season are pinks and lilacs, as appose the grays and pewter colors from last season. Hope this helps you CC.

Is it better to use your eyelash curler before or after applying your mascara?
Also, which type is the best to use for your eyelashes, the metal or plastic type?
Thanks!
April 16th, 2009 at 8:15 pm
Dear Drea,
I am so glad you ask that question. Always curl your lashes before you apply your mascara. Curling afterwards can be very dangerous and can cause your eyelashes to break.
My all time favorite eyelash curler is the Shumera which can be bought at Sephora. I am aware that we do not have a Sephora in Vancouver yet, so you have to order it online. The Shisedo and Bobby Brown are a close second choice. All three of these are the metal ones.
Stay away from the Revlon one, I have heard of it cutting off peoples eyelashes, which is horrifying.

Hi Maria,
I was wondering if you’d be able to advise me on hair color. I’m 26 and just started seeing gray’s and am wondering which product is best recommended.

Dear Ann,
I have to be honest I don’t know that much about products when it comes to hair color. I can tell you though that I would recommend getting it done by a professional. The difference between over the counter hair color and the professional stuff is amazing. Let me know if you need the name of a good colorist.

Hi Ann,
I agree with what Maria has said in regards to getting it done by a professional, as I have worked in the hair industry myself. Over the counter colour is very unpredictable as it is generally formulated for a person with a lot of grey hair and is very hard on your hair. It is also quite difficult for a professional to fix once you have has a mishap with it, as they are very limited to what they can do. Depending on your hair history, colour and amount of grey, you have so many options to chose from when seeing a colourist. Having grey hair doesn’t really limit you what colour you want, although I would recommend going a lighter tone as you don’t see the grey as much when it grows back in. This helps you to spread out your visits to the colourist a little bit, and save a little money.
I would also recommend getting colour safe professional shampoo and conditioner as they will definitely help to keep that colour lasting between visits. They are a bit pricey, but there really is a difference in the quality of the product. Just remember, you invest a pretty penny into colouring your hair, don’t wash it down the drain with inexpensive after care products!
I hope this information is helpful to you!

Hi Maria,
I’m 25 and I have dry acne pron type skin. Several years ago I had major acne breakouts and now I’m left with some scars on my cheeks. What do you think of laser treatments? And which moisturizing creams would you recommend I use on a regular basis?
Thank you for all this generous information!
April 27th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Dear Nush,
Thanks for you question. I am not opposed to laser treatments as long as it is done by someone with a lot of experience. This is one area you don’t want to skim on. There are many benefits and drawbacks to laser treatments, in fact I will write a blog post for you with more information about this tonight or early tomorrow.
Although before trying laser, I would try dabbing a little Vitamin E oil daily on the scars. A lot of the time this works.
The best moisturizers are those with vitamins A,C and E. If you have very oily skin then I recommend only using the moisturizer when your skin is feeling dry or tight.

Hi Sarah,
Mac has a good full coverage foundation, but it sounds like you may need something a little heavier. Start with a beard cover concealer from either Ben Nye, cinema secrets or Dermablend. Then stipple some foundation over top of it.
The Ben Nye, cinema secrets or Dermablend beard cover have an orange tone to help cancel out the blue of the stubble. All of these can be found at makeup speciality stores.
As for a good under eye concealer, you will have to wait till my Ten Favorites list is done. I promise it won’t be much longer.
If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask.
