Vancouver Makeup Artist Favorites-#7

Bridal Makeup, Makeup Questions and Tips, Vancouver Makeup General 2 Comments »

I actually had a few phone calls and emails from you guys, asking me what #7 is.  I love that everyone is enjoying this list so much.  I didn’t want to make you wait any longer, so here it is, Vancouver makeup artist’s #7 favorite product.

beautyblog_2-6Have you ever wondered why when you are watching T.V. why all the girls skin looks so flawless?  It’s not just the skin on their face, but their arms, legs and even their backs have such a beautiful glow.  Well, that is because we put that glow there!  Whenever an actress has a part of her skin exposed, we use body makeup or lotions on it.  There are a lot of different lotions and body makeups to choose from, but “Scott Barnes Body Bling” is my all time favorite.  It is different from the lotions with some shimmer in them, because it is also a body makeup.  For those of you who don’t know who Scott Barnes is, he is most popularly know for being JLo’s makeup artist and is originally responsible for giving her the “glow”.

Body Bling works to help even out your bodies skin tone, while giving it a little shimmer.  If you are trying to achieve a smooth, glow to the skin on your body, Body Bling is the way to go.  Body Bling has a bronze tint and a luminescent shimmer to give your skin a sexy highlight.  I find that it goes on evenly without heavy streaking and can be washed off easily if you apply too much.

scottbarnesUnfortunately we have to remember is it makeup and it can rub off on your clothes if you are not careful.  Even though it looks best against white or other light colored clothes, I wouldn’t recommend wearing them together, unless you are okay with a little staining.  When wearing it outside during the day, you have to remember that the simmer acts like a magnifying glass just like lipgloss does, so you must wear sunscreen underneath it.   In fact I never use it on actors and clients if they will be outside in the daytime.  I recommend you limit wearing it to your fabulous evenings out.

For some strange reason the body bling was discontinued for a short time, but is making a relaunch soon.  For those of you were are interested in getting your hands on this body bling, it can be found on ebay.  I will also let you know as soon as it is relauched.

Hope you found this useful.  If you have any questions or comments on this or any other product, feel free to click “comments” above.

Laser Scar Removal

Vancouver Makeup General 2 Comments »

6a00e551edb0a78834011168fa05db970c-800wiYesterday I had a great question from a reader.  She asked about laser skin treatments. Being a makeup artist in the Vancouver T.V. and film industry, I know of a lot of actors who have had this treatment done and most were happy with the results.  Since I have neither gone through the procedure nor seen it being performed on anyone else,  I wanted to make sure I knew more about it.  I looked in to the different types of laser treatments, and I have gathered some information for you guys on the most common and least invasive type of laser scar treatment.

bld045929The most common laser scar treatment seems to be microdermabrasion.  This  works as an anti-aging procedure and can be offered as a treatment for acne scars, hyperpigmentation, texturally rough skin, striae, and photodamaged skin. Microdermabration is usually performed on the face, but is also used on the neck, back, arms, elbows, chest, knees and hands. Although you can see the benefits after one treatment, it is said that it works best when you do a series of peels.

What is this treatment recommended for?

  • Dull or sun damaged skin
  • Texturally rough skin
  • Stretch marks
  • Mild wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Dry skin
  • Blotchy or uneven skin tones and textures
  • Striae

libra-microdermabrasion11When deciding if having this done is right for you, it is important to weigh the pros and cons. Lets look at some of the advantages of Microdermabrasion.  When compared to other laser or surgical treatments, it is rather inexpensive and there is much less recovery time.  As well there are fewer side effects than chemical peels and anesthetics aren’t required.  It is said that is it safe for those of all skin tones.  The best part of all is, it’s a quick procedure.

Now lets look at some of the disadvantages.  There can be slight discomfort after the procedure, where you may feel tingling or tightness of the skin.  Many times microdermabrasion will not work on deep wrinkles or pigment problems, which can be frustrating and a waste of money.  Often you will have to go for several treatments before you see any results, especially with darker pigment areas.  Even though the recovery time is quicker than other laser and surgical procedures, you still  may experience some redness for up to a few days, and it’s recommended to stay out of the sun for a week.  Finally, like anything else there are some risks and side effects to the procedure.  The most common side effect of laser scar removal is hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, both can be caused by sun exposure.  Infection or allergic reactions to the procedure are also possible, but can be treated medically.

What does the procedure entail?

comboskin-main_fullProcedures of microdermabrasion are also commonly referred to as “sand blasting”, a process that uses a high-pressure stream of aluminum oxide crystals to superficially peel the upper layer of the skin.
All your makeup must be removed and then you skin is washed with a special cleanser.  The treatment is said to take about 30 minutes.  As I said the skin has a slight redness which most commonly lasts a few hours to a day. You are allowed to wear makeup after the procedure, but personally I wouldn’t recommend that.  Microdermabrasion is not recommended for people who have severe acne, advanced aging, sunburns, extensive hyperpigmentation, skin disorders, or sensitive skin.

If you are thinking about getting this procedure done I think it’s best if you talk more about this with your dermatologist.  I know many of you do not have a dermatologist that you know and or trust.  I have been to a dermatologist here in Vancouver that I would definitely recommend.  Dr Richard Thomas had great bedside manner and takes the time to explain.  He is located at 888 W 8th in Vancouver.  You will need a referral from your family doctor before you can see any dermatologist.

I have a friend who is going in to have a laser skin treatment done this week.  I will be giving her a list of before and after questions about the procedure.  If you have any questions you would like to add to the list please click “comments” above to leave your questions.

How to dress up your eyes

Eyelash Extensions, Makeup Questions and Tips, Vancouver Makeup General 7 Comments »

15298Earlier today my husband and I were talking about the difference in my before and after photos for the eyelash extensions.  He asked me a great question.  He said, “why are eyelashes so important? Why do they make such a big difference?”

At first I thought he was crazy for asking, what I thought was such an obvious question.  He was so surprised by the answer. Then it hit me, most people do not realize how big of difference just your eyelash and you eyebrows make to your face.

The truth is, the your eyes are the most noticeable feature to your face.  Many times your eyes will be the first thing someone notices about you.  Your eyelashes are the frame of your eyes.  I mean you could have the most beautiful picture but without the perfect frame often the picture will go unnoticed.  That is why eyelashes make such a difference to you face.

There are many ways to dress up your eyelashes.  Of course there is the traditional applying mascara, or wearing a bit of eyeliner, but now you can tint your lashes, curl your lashes and of course have temporary, or semi-permanent extensions.   With all these options, how do you decide which is for you?  Lets compare your options.

If you have long brown or lighter colored lashes

6a00e54f9af1068834011168693b16970cIf your lashes are already long enough, but you wish they were darker to help frame your eyes, you have two options. If you don’t really like wearing mascara, then perhaps you should try tinting your lashes.  Of course this should always be done by a professional!

Your other option which is more of a daily maintenance is simply wearing mascara.  I always recommend before applying mascara you curl your lashes with a good quality eyelash curler (shuemura).  Mascara can tend to weigh down your lashes sometimes causing the eyes to look a little droopy.  Curling them before hand will open up the eyes.  I also recommend non-waterproof mascara because it doesn’t take so much tugging at you eyes and lashes to remove it.

If you have short lashes

renew_eyelash_pictureIf you feel your eyelashes are too short for you, in this case I would suggest some sort of an extension.  If daily maintenance  doesn’t bother you then after curling your lashes and applying mascara then you can add a few individual clusters to the corner of your lashes. This gives you some length without the false look you can get from strip lashes. If you feel like this is too much work for you and you wanted something that requires no makeup and much less maintenance, then I would definitely recommend to semi-permanent extensions.  You can learn a bit more about them on my eyelash extension page.

If you have any questions about what would work best for you, then please leave your comments, and I will help you find the perfect routine for you.

Vancouver Makeup Artist- #8 favorite

Makeup Questions and Tips, Vancouver Makeup General 0 Comment »

hands-with-feetI can’t believe how many people are asking me to cheat and tell them what the next product will be on this list.   I can’t ruin the surprise for you, now can I?  My #8 favorite product is something I use on myself almost everyday.  Working as a makeup artist in the Vancouver T.V and film industry, continuity becomes important, so for nails that always look fabulous, we use O.P.I Nail Envy.  Not only do I use it on my actors, but I personally use this product almost everyday.  For those of you who have never heard of this Nail Envy I will tell you a little about it.

Nail Envy is a clear coat that you apply directly to your natural nail.  You would apply two coats the first day and one coat everyday after that for one week.  After one week you take it all off and start the process over.   It supposed to work to protect your nails while keeping them strong, and does it ever.

135530_fullI have always known about Nail Envy and have used it for clients and celebs for years now, but having acrylic nails myself, I never had the chance to use it.  About 4 months ago I decided to take a break from having my nails done and did my natural nail felt so painful. They had been ground down so much under the acrylics that it hurt me to run my hands under water.  I thought “I am gonna have to put the nails back on pronto.  Until I get a chance to go back I will try some of my Nail Envy from my makeup kit.”  It was amazing!  I always knew it was a great product, but didn’t realized how strong it was.  I decided that I wouldn’t go back to the acrylics anymore.

So what is the down side to O.P.I  Nail Envy?  The one thing that frustrates me is the fact that it has to be applied one coat daily.  That can be very time consuming when you have a few busy days.  I mean its not just the 5 minutes it takes to apply it that I am opi_nail_envy_1concerned about, but rather the drying time.  Granted it does seem to dry quicker than most strengthening polish’s and works a lot better too.  How many of you have 30 minutes each and everyday to do your nails?  I know I don’t, so I tend to not use it exactly as directed.  Not using it as directed does not give you the same results, but I find it works well enough for me.

Nail Envy runs for about $25 CAD and can be found at most drugstore.  This product comes in a variety of options, for soft and thin nails, extra shine, and so on.  My favorite of the Nail Envy’s is the original, I just find it works the best.

Miracle eye cream-How to get rid of those ugly bags!

Makeup Questions and Tips, Vancouver Makeup General 2 Comments »

puffyeyesHow many of you are wondering how to get rid of those bags under your eyes?  Most eye creams advertise that they are wrinkle preventers, but what about those sacs that you get under your eyes after a night of no sleep?  Guess what?   Like everything else, there is a solution.  Working as a makeup artist in the film industry in Vancouver, you pick up little tricks along the way.  There is a miracle eye cream for your bags under your eyes, but it isn’t actually an eye cream at all.  Interested?

This little trick that makeup artists use for actors who’ve been up partying all night is Preparation H!  You might be asking “isn’t that for hemorrhoids”?  It sure is!  This bum cream works wonders for your eyes.  Now I don’t think it is necessary for you to put it on everyday like you would with your regular eye cream.  Instead, just on mornings when you are feeling a little puffy.  In fact, if you feel the need to wear it everyday, then your bags may be hereditary and in that case the cream would not work for you.  Preparation H is usually used under the eyes in cases where the actor or client is puffy from lack of sleep, intense crying the night before,  or when he or she has a cold.

product-2008919164247Something to keep in mind… If you do decide to add this cream to your makeup kit, then I would also buy a little clear bottle to put the cream in, unless you don’t mind getting caught with Preparation H in your bathroom.

If you have anymore questions about this or any other posts please feel free to leave your comments, as I always look forward to hearing your feedback.

Eyelash Extensions in Vancouver

Bridal Makeup, Eyelash Extensions, Makeup Questions and Tips, Vancouver Makeup General 0 Comment »

thumb_port3Over the past few years I have been seeing them more and more.  Eyelash extensions, what an amazing idea.  They are the new makeup trend, and are becoming the next big thing all over the world.  All the hollywood celeb’s are getting them done, they have become extremely popular in the Asia, Europe, US, and Eastern Canada.  So why has it taken so long for it to become popular in Vancouver?  Why is it that we are always the last ones to catch on?

As soon as I heard of them, I was intrigued, so I researched them and was so impressed with what I saw.  I wanted to spread the word about this revolutionary trend.  No more running mascara through out the day?  No more wedding pictures with noticeable line from the fake strip lashes?  Woman can be free to go swimming in a pool or at the beach, without their eye makeup running down their face?  We can be free at last!  I thought I want the woman in Vancouver to be able to enjoy this too.  I want them to have the same quality as they get in Europe, I want the woman in my city to feel as beautiful as the rest of the world.  So I looked up which eyelash extensions seemed to be the best quality.  I found a company that was based out of Quebec, and they had one teacher here in Vancouver.  ”Perfect!”  I thought, and they were.

thumb_port12After my first client I was really nervous to hear what she would say after she got them done.  Her first words were, “Wow I can’t even feel them!”  and then followed by ” I love them so much, thank you.”  I knew right then and there that I had made a great decision.

If anyone of you have any question about eyelash extensions, I am more than happy to answer them, just click on “comments”. I will answering you as soon as I can.  For those of you interested in eyelash extensions, contact me for a free over the phone consultation, we will decide if you need a full set for a more dramatic look, or just a partial to add a little boost to your eyes.

Take a look at the before and after below.

Vancouver Makeup Artist- #9 favorite

Bridal Makeup, Makeup Questions and Tips, Vancouver Makeup General 0 Comment »

Okay enough waiting– I think its time to give you my #9 favorite product. Working as a makeup artist in the Vancouver T.V and Film industry I have to make sure my actors look fabulous all day, even after wearing their makeup for 16 hours.  The same is true when I am doing makeup for a wedding, I don’t normally stay with the bride for their entire special day.   So what do I always suggest they use?

Mac Blot Tissues

mac-blot-film-30sheets-1250I love these little tissues.  I also like the ones from Clean and Clear, but I picked the Mac ones because they are slightly larger, which gives you more use out of one paper.  Working as a makeup artist in the Vancouver T.V and Film industry, the number one thing we have to watch out for is too much shine.   Under the hot lights the cast gets very shiny very quickly.  You can imagine how quickly the powder can build up.  Especially now with high definition television over-powdering is more noticeable that ever.  This is why I always keep a pack of mac blot tissues in each cast members’ bag.

42-15456938As well when working with brides, I always recommend they keep a pack of these in the maid-of-honour’s purse.   Brides are extremely busy on their special day so I am sure they don’t get a lot of chances to go the bathroom and re-apply their powder.   The last thing a bride needs is to get her wedding pictures back from her photographer and realize she was a soggy mess.

I am suggesting that if you find yourself re-applying your powder several times a day, carry a pack of blot tissues in your purse.  These blot tissues don’t clog your pores like over-powdering will.

cleanclearoilabsorbingsheets-529-drugstoreLike I said all good things have an opposite side as well, so lets look at the con’s.  Mac blot tissues are more expensive than the other tissues, about $15 CAD.  The clean and clear wipes are a little more cost friendly, they go for about $7, but like I said they are smaller so sometimes you have to use two at a time.  Also if you don’t always have a garbage can handy you will have a whole lot of oily wipes in your purse (gross!).  As good as these tissues are they are not nearly as strong as powder, so for people with oily skin they will have to carry both in their purse.

I hope you guys find this list helpful!  I love hearing your feedback on the blog and the products that I suggest, so leave your comments.

Vancouver Makeup Artist-skin care tip

The importance of exfoliating

exfoliation-main_fullDid you know that the very outer layer of your skin is actually dead skin cells? Your skin forms new layer of cells and the dead ones on the surface come off on their own. Whether you realize this or not, your skin does this everyday. Over time you can start to  get a build up of old skin on the surface of your skin, resulting in skin that appears dull.  Often this also leads to clogged pores, which causes the skin to breakout. This is why getting rid of the dead skin is essential to have healthy looking skin.  Lets talk a little about the different forms of exfoliating.

Chemical exfoliants usually contain some form of mild acid, such as alpha hydroxy or salicylic acid. The acids work remove the dead skin cells. These actually come in different strengths and can be applied on their own, or in conjunction with an abrasive exfoliant.

Mechanical exfoliants this is also know as scrubs.  The dead skin cells are physically rubbed off with an abrasive. Examples of mechanical exfoliation include a lofa sponge, a body scrub that might use sugar or coffee grounds, or sea salt scrub. Mechancial exfoliations or scrubs used for the face should always be round shaped small beads, because irregular shaped scrubs, such as crushed apricot etc, can cause microscopic cuts in the face.

superstock_1613r-5364Make this part of your skin care routine by using a mechanical exfoliant once a week.  This will ensure your skin stays healthy looking and maintains that natural glow.  Remember not to limit your exfoliating to just your face. Exfoliating can benefit all areas of your body. By removing the dead skin on your feet they will stay softer, smoother and be less likely to smell.  Exfoliating the elbows and knees can help with eliminating the dry rough skin on them.  So don’t forget to love the rest of your skin with a weekly mechanical exfoliant.

Hope you enjoyed this blog.  Looking forward to hearing your feedback!

Vancouver Makeup Artist- Ten Favorites

Makeup Questions and Tips, Vancouver Makeup General 0 Comment »

As a makeup artist in Vancouver the most common question I get asked, next to “what famous actors have you worked on? ” Is ” What is your favorite makeup line?”  That is an impossible question to answer, because some products work fabulously on one face and horribly on another.  There are so many factors that come in to play.  What I have decided to do is list the top ten products I reach for most often in my makeup kit.  Over the next few weeks I will list my favorite products from #10-1, 1 being my favorite of course.  I will do my best to list all the pros and cons of each product.   I just wanna remind everyone that not all these products will work the same for everyone.  Lets start with #10

Revlon Colorstay foundation

326690_lI love this foundation, I prefer using it through the airbrush but often I apply it directly to the skin.  The name says it all “Colorstay” this foundation needs little to no touch ups and provides excellent coverage that lasts hours. It has a matte finish and doesn’t require caking on powder to keep it in place.  It’s seems to be semi water resistant, so I tend to use it on for a rainy day wedding or while working on a film set when I know my actress may get wet. Revlon Colorstay has a variety of colors so its perfect for women of all skin tones.  My favorite part about this product is that you don’t have to break the bank to have it.  One bottle goes for about $16 CAD.

As we all know all good things have  bad sides, so here they are.  Revlon Colorstay dries very quickly so you have to work very fast with it, once it dries it is impossible to blend.  This product along with a lot of other products dries slightly darker on the skin than when it is in the bottle.  This can make finding the perfect color very hard.  When using this product I tend to mix two colors together to get the perfect shade for my clients.  The final con the this product is, that because of its staying power, its very hard to remove at the end of the day.  It takes Makeup remover wipes and strong cleansers to get it off, which can be hard on your skin and if not removed properly can cause breakouts.  So this is why I don’t recommend it for everyday use, just for special occasions.

Hope you found this useful!  Feel free to leave your comments.

Lip gloss related to cancer?

Vancouver Makeup General 6 Comments »

lipglossVancouver Makeup Artist answers– Is lipgloss related to lip cancer?

I am sorry to tell you this ladies but its true!  Scientists announced a strong link between wearing lip gloss and getting lip cancer. Recent studies have shown that lip cancer has double in women who wear lipgloss or shiny lip balm. Dermatologist Christine White of Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas has stated that shiny lip balm and gloss increases risk of skin cancer and that people do not realize the risk they put themselves in when they use the shiny lip balms and glosses.  Because our lips do not have the pigment melanin, the pigment in our skin that acts as a natural sunscreen, our lips are more susceptible to chronic sun damage and are prone to develop cancers.   Wearing shiny lip balms and lip gloss will actually act as a magnifying mirror making you more at risk for lip cancer.

What can you do to protect yourself?

lipsAs a makeup artist in Vancouver one of the products I use most regularly is lip gloss.  I have an obligation to keep up with current literature, and know about these studies pass on that info and keep actors and clients safe.  Just like before applying foundation you would apply a good sunblock, you must do the same for your lips.  Find a lip balm with SPF 30 and apply that to your lips before you apply your gloss!  Most people assume that this should be done only in the summer when then sun is out.  You always need to protect you lips, as there are harmful UV rays all year round, even when the sun is hiding behind the clouds (in our dreary Pacific Northwest winters).  Be smart and wear SPF balm!

I hope this information is useful to you.  I would love to hear your feedback!
